One more day, every god damned day.
Tomorrow's reason to get up and not stab myself 47 times in the torso is Little Boots' "Remedy". Because sugary, upbeat dance music is as good a reason as any to keep going. Current Mood: fucking horidCurrent Music: Little Boots - Remedy |

Funny picture
I was going through some old motivators, culling ones that I didn't like anymore or didn't remember saving (don't ask), and I found the one under the cut. Maybe 2012 is gonna be awesome, after all. ( Who ya gonna call? ) |

Bad idea
Why does anyone ever let me have or manage money? I've no idea what I'm doing. How I'm not starving and homeless is a frikkin' miracle. |

I will hang around as long as you will let me.
So I read something or another not too long ago about what music would define your college experience if you could distill it down to one song. I had a real hard time thinking about this until I remembered, duh, I graduated from Texas A&M University. Any fellow Ags will back me up on this one: I mean, I didn't even go out to bars, yet this song permeated my entire time there, and it wasn't even released until I was a junior. I was initially reminded of this during an episode of Squidbillies where Early was put in charge of Dan Halen Enterprises. He had a hat signifying this that read "David Allan CEO: Live in Macon". Also, I want chicken-fried steak. That is all. Good night. Current Mood: Never called by nameCurrent Music: Loverboy, obviously. |

Holy shit
So "Badass of the Week" has featured lots of crazy motherfuckers willing to look Death in the eye and sing showtunes, but I can't think of many others that are insane enough to go around disarming thousands upon thousands of landmines with a knife, a sharp stick and a total disregard for their own well-being. Cambodia's Aki Ra is a stone-cold BADASS. |

Just 'cuz it's Wednesday
Released on the One of These Nights album in 1975, The Eagles' "Journey of the Sorcerer" was later used as the theme song to most, if not all versions of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" adaptations, even getting a bit of a makeover for the latest movie release. Full Orchestra + Banjo = Space, I suppose. Or maybe they just chose it because it's one of the best songs ever produced. Regardless, here's a neat little video someone made with cosmic scenery. Dinner
Dinner last night was supposed to be the last of my left over beef stew, though it had sat in the fridge a bit too long. It was completely unappetizing, and I wasn't sure of its safety. Dinner last night ended up being an entire bag of Chessmen butter cookies and a glass of milk. Oh man, I am healthy. Current Music: Cage the Elephant - Ain't No Rest For The Wicked |

Two short items about radio stations.
It was only a few weeks ago that I found out about KUFO here in Portland. One of the first things I heard them play was Iron Maiden. I can count the number of radio stations I've heard play Maiden on one hand. It was a great thing to have while driving around. So of course, they were bought out and shut down by a huge broadcasting corporation recently. Shades of Mega 99.5 back in Austin. sighAlso, the radio station of choice in the warehouse at work is 105.9 "The Brew". They play a lot of Bon Jovi, and just a lot of stuff one might here at a bar where people might shout "Woooo!" a lot. Old Guns 'N Roses. RATT. Anyone with a rock/metal hit in the 80's or 90's. It's one of those stations that seems to have a whole 7 songs on their playlist, but it's just because most of the stuff they play seems so damn familiar. Was that "Wanted: Dead or Alive" or "Blaze of Glory"? Anyway, one of the only really good things I can say about them is that they play Joan Jett's I Hate Myself For Loving You just as much as they play anything else. Honestly, I expected "I Love Rock and Roll", but this was a treat. I always forget how awesome this song is until I run into it again. And as for that link, well, Ms. Jett looks fucking incredible in leather and big 80's hair. Enjoy your Monday, people. Current Mood: rockin'Current Music: Joan Jett - I Hate Myself For Loving You |

I miss my old neighbors
So this place I'm living has gone from Mainly Grown Ups With Jobs And Shit all the way to Mainly College Students. The dude in #1 is apparently fond of loud get-togethers. It is supremely annoying. I'm thinking of moving again at the end of this year when my lease is up. Oh well. More debt! |

C'mon, seriously.
Ok, Mr. Clyde Nakamura, you've got an FIDE rating of 2089, which is approaching Master status. You'd kick my ass up and down the chess board, sure. This does not mean that you call "1. d4 Nf6, 2. e4" The Omega Gambit, especially when it had been previously discovered as the Reynolds Gambit and the Bo Gambit. This is chess, not superhero comic books. Just because you discovered this line independently while having recently watched Charlton Heston's "Omega Man" (I am not making that up) does not mean you need to give it a goofy fucking name. I am obviously getting too old. Current Mood: chessyCurrent Music: Andrew W.K. - Party Hard |

"The Getaway" is a bad movie, no matter the decade
So in an effort to check out more Steve McQueen movies, I had Netflix send me the original version of "The Getaway". Partway through I realized that I had seen the remake with Alec Baldwin and Kim Bassinger on video back in the mid-90's. Just like then, none of the characters were really likeable, none of the villains were all that intriguing, and it seemed like someone went out of their way to make a movie I wouldn't enjoy. So there's that. In other netflix news, I'm just getting into a couple of older Bruce Campbell TV series that I missed out on completely. "The Adventures of Briscoe County Jr" looks to be amazing after the first 3 episodes. I am looking forward to more. I've only seen the first episode of "Jack of All Trades", but I am hoping it avoids the pit trap of "Let's make a show built on the cliche romantic tension between two main characters, but don't resolve anything before the show gets canned." Honestly, I almost had enough when the female lead proclaimed that they would Never Have Sexy Make Outs. But the acting by the leads is solid, though I can't say the same for the Generic French Antagonists. The Scarlett Pimpernel twist is interesting, and I do hope that Bruce Campbell is described as a "foppish dandy" at some point or another. So, yeah, useless movie and tv reviews for you on a Monday. Badass and other stuff Bruce Crandall is a total fucking badass for winning the Congressional Medal of Honor without the use of a weapon, and was a completely insane helicopter pilot in Vietnam. In other news, I got to hang out with slr2moons today, and really just had a fun time walking around downtown. We met in Powell's where I got a copy of Edgar Rice Burroghs' "A Princess of Mars", something I've been wanting to read ever since Amazing Ben wrote about John Carter, also of Mars. Maybe I'll get around to reading it sometime next year. I also saw Powell's Japanese manga section which made me wish I had a grasp on languages (too bad I can barely grasp English). I also got boots! I just want some footwear that won't blow out in a few short months. It is apparently a Big Deal. Most shoes I get do not last long, at least not when I have a half-hour walk to and from the train station to my work each day. And really, it was good to be able to geek out about manga in person with someone. Haven't done that in a good long while. I also got off my ass for a few hours, which is very good. And now I am le tired. Current Music: DJ Kewlaid - Trance Classics Volume 01 |

Seriously, what the hell.
So maybe some of you are thinking, knastymike, now that you have left The South(ern United States), surely ignorance and bigotry are a thing of the past! No friends, it is not so. I have discovered that Portland has an abundance of something I like to call "Enlightened White Liberalism". Please note that this name may be sarcastic, facetious and possibly even ironic. I moved here for the weather, not for this shit. tl:dr - "Happy Coming Out Week" is responded to with "Fuck you". |
